What Is an Intermediate Certificate?

rigister now!
When you buy an SSL Certificate from GoDaddy.com you may come across the concept of intermediate certificates, which must be installed along with your SSL Certificate.
But what is an intermediate certificate, exactly? An intermediate certificate is a subordinate certificate issued by the trusted root specifically to issue end-entity server certificates. The result is a certificate chain that begins at the trusted root CA, through the intermediate and ending with the SSL certificate issued to you.
Creating certificates directly from the CA root certificate increases the risk of root certificate compromise, and if the CA root certificate is compromised, the entire trust infrastructure built by the SSL provider will fail. The usage of intermediate certificates for issuing SSL certificates to end entities, therefore, provides an added level of security. In an attempt to enhance the security of the Root certificate, Go Daddy, in fact, creates two intermediate certificates from which SSL certificates are signed and issued.
Once Go Daddy issues your SSL certificate, they will send you an email message containing a link for downloading the signed certificate, along with the intermediate certificates. The specific procedure through which the intermediate certificates are installed depends on the type of server software you are using. In most cases, you can download and install an intermediate certificate bundle, but for certain server types, you must download and install the two intermediate certificates individually.

Activating Your Parked Domain Name

rigister now!
When you register a domain name with GoDaddy.com, you have the option of parking the domain — that is, you don’t add a hosting plan and a Web site to the domain. You can park the domain as a money-making effort with, for example, Go Daddy’s CashParking program, or you can hold onto the domain as an investment and try to sell it for profit at a later date, but in most cases domain owners park their newly acquired domains until they’ve built their Web site and decided which hosting account they want to affiliate with the domain.

Once you’re ready to activate — or “unpack” — your parked domain, you must purchase a hosting account and then change the name server information on your Go Daddy account. This is how to do it:
  • Go to GoDaddy.com and log in to your Account Manager.
  • In the My Products section, select Domain Manager.
  • Select the domain name(s) you want to modify.
  • Click Nameservers.
Depending on your hosting provider, select one of the following:
If you’re hosting with Go Daddy: Choose I have a hosting account with these domains — This specifies that your domain name(s) are hosted with Go Daddy and you want to use their name servers.
If you’re hosting elsewhere: Choose I have specific nameservers for my domains to specify your domain name(s) are hosted with another company and allow you to enter the company’s name servers. Note that you must enter at least two name servers for your domain name.
  •    Click OK.
It takes about 4-8 hours for .com and .net domains and about 24-48 hours for all other domain name extensions before name servers on other networks can access the information after the central registry receives it.

Re-Keying an SSL Certificate

rigister now!
Re-keying is the process of replacing an existing SSL certificate. The main reasons to consider re-keying your SSL certificate are:
Loss of your private key
Compromise of your private key
Changing hosting providers
Changing the server the certificate is installed on
Recovering from a server crash
If you bought your certificate from Go Daddy, you can have it re-keyed at no cost..
To re-key a Go Daddy SSL Certificate:
  • Go to the Go Daddy Web site and log in to your Account Manager.
  • In the My Products section, select SSL Certificates.
  • Next to the certificate you want to manage, click Manage Certificate.
  • From the Filters list, click Certificates and then click the common name for the certificate you want to re-key. Copy the certificate details shown on the screen and use that exact data when creating a new CSR. Exact capitalization, punctuation and spacing are required. For Standard certificates the CSR details for City, State and Country are not critical.
  • Generate a new CSR.
  • After the new CSR is generated, return to the Secure Certificate Manager. From the screen where you copied your certificate details, click Re-Key.
  • Paste your server-generated CSR in the CSR field and click Re-Key.
  • Specify your server type and click the link to download the re-keyed certificate.
  • If you need a copy of the intermediate certificate, click Repository in the upper-right corner.
  • Install the re-keyed certificate on your Web server.

Note: The original certificate is automatically deactivated when the new one is issued. It is not necessary to request revocation of the old certificate.

About .asia Domain Names

rigister now!
Country- and region-specific domain names can be very useful for businesses whose activities are directed at markets in specific locations. For example, if your e-business is targeting the European Union, it’ll lend credibility to your site if it sits on a .eu domain. Likewise, if you’re doing business in, say, Brazil or South Africa, you should consider registering, respectively, a .br or .sa domain for your site.
And if your business is located in Asia, there’s a domain extension for that, too. It’s called .asia, and here’s a primer on its details and requirements and how to register it with GoDaddy.com.
The .asia top-level domain name (TLD) is an ICANN-sponsored domain name extension that represents the Asia-Pacific region. A .asia domain name gives you exposure to the region as a whole, as opposed to individual countries, such as a .jp or .cn extension.
In order to register a .asia domain with Go Daddy, you must be directly affiliated with Asia: That is: Your business, organization, or community group must be located in the Asia-Pacific region, or at least one of your domain name contacts must reside there.
To register a .asia domain name
  •  Go to the Go Daddy Web site and enter the domain you want to register in the Domain Search field.
  • Select the .asia extension from the list.
  • Click Go, and then proceed through the checkout screens.

If the domain you’re looking for is already taken, you can either choose one of the alternatives Go Daddy suggests or start a new search.

Keeping Your Web Site Content Fresh for the Search Engines

rigister now!
One of, admittedly, many factors that search engines like Google, Yahoo! and Bing look at when they calculate how to rank a Web page is the so-called “freshness” of the content. In theory, the search engines will tend to reward pages whose content is frequently updated while pages whose content rarely (or never) changes are considered stale and might take a hit in the rankings. Of course, this is just one thing to consider when you optimize your site for search engines, and if you’re using an SEO program like Go Daddy’s Search Engine Visibility, you can easily analyze your site’s search engine readiness in such areas as: keyword selection, tags, links, ranking, and much more. But content freshness is harder to measure.
Nevertheless, there are few things you can keep in mind:
Clearly, it’s opportune for you to keep your content fresh when you’re pursuing a top search engine ranking. But how and to what extent you really need to do it obviously depends on the type of content on your page. In a nutshell: Some content naturally gains from freshness, while other types will do just fine even if you don’t update it all the time.
For example: If your site is in any way related to current events, such as politics, sports, scientific research, etc., there’s always something going on, so if your content just stays the same for long stretches of time, it is indeed becoming stale — and Google and the other search engines will notice it. On the other hand, if your site is dedicated to, say, the history of the Roman Empire, then you can certainly update it if new research or new excavations deliver ground-breaking new material, but you don’t really have to write a new entry every day about the assassination of Julius Caesar! Of if your site is all about the fabled 1970 Soccer World Cup or the equally famous 1986 World Series, then you can certainly get away with nurturing existing content instead of constantly adding new stuff.
Still, adding well written, inspired, informative, entertaining content not only will tend to impress the search engines; it will also be appreciated by your visitors who will then come back for more — even if you don’t see an immediate boost in your search engine rankings.
So, to summarize: Fresh is good; stale is often, but not always, bad. Use your good judgment, and simply focus on building and maintaining a great Web site.

What Is DNSSEC and How Does it Work?

rigister now!
The scams, swindles, ruses and rip-offs infesting the Internet can make navigating the Web a minefield for those who aren’t careful. If you’re conducting business on the Web, this means that you must do everything in your power to protect yourself and your customers from harmful attacks. One of the means of doing this called DNSSEC, which is short for “Domain Name System Security Extensions.” But what, exactly, is DNSSEC, and how does it work? Here’s a primer:
DNSSEC, which is available from domain registrars like GoDaddy.com, addresses an identified security risk and helps prevent malicious activities like cache poisoning, pharming, and man-in-the-middle attacks. It uses a digital signature to create a chain of authority. Then, it uses the chain to verify that the source domain name, which the DNS resolver returns, matches the DNS record stored at the authoritative DNS. If it cannot validate the source, it discards the response. Thus, DNSSEC’s digital signature ensures that you’re communicating with the site or Internet location you intended to visit and not a bogus site trying to steal your identity or infect your computer.
Specifically, DNSSEC is a set of extensions to DNS that provides:
  •     Origin authentication of DNS data
  •     Data integrity
  •     Authenticated denial of existence
At GoDadddy.com, they are currently offering two types of DNSSEC: self-managed and fully managed. Here are the criteria for each type:
 To use self-managed DNSSEC services:
Your domain name must be registered through Go Daddy.
The domain name’s registry must be DNSSEC-aware, and Go Daddy must support it for the domain name’s extension:
.com
.net
.biz
.us
.org
.eu
.co.uk, .me.uk, and .org.uk
.co, .com.co, .net.co, and .nom.co
The domain name must use custom name servers. That is, it is not hosted, parked, or forwarding with Go Daddy
The domain name must be in active status, not flagged by the registry, and have valid Whois data.
To use fully managed DNSSEC services:
You must have a Go Daddy Premium DNS account.
The domain name’s registry must be DNSSEC-aware, and Go Daddy must support it for the domain name’s extension:
  •         .com
  •         .net
  •         .biz
  •         .us
  •         .org
  •         .eu
  •         .co.uk, .me.uk, and .org.uk
  •         .co, .com.co, .net.co, and .nom.co
The domain name must use Go Daddy’s name servers.

Forwarding or Masking Your Domain Name

rigister now!
When you register a new domain name with GoDaddy.com or another registrar, you may consider forwarding that domain to a different Web site. For example, you may want to send visitors to your new domain to an existing Web site, but you prefer not to have to move your entire site to the new domain. Instead, you can consider forwarding your domain so all visitors are automatically sent to your current site’s URL. And if you want this process to happen stealthily behind the scenes, you can forward and mask the domain, so the name in the browser’s address field won’t change and visitors won’t know they’re being forwarded.
To illustrate this:
If you forward the domain coolexample.com to coolexample.net, then, when a visitor types coolexample.com into his or her browser, he or she will instead be directed to coolexample.net, and the URL in the address bar will automatically change to coolexample.net.
If, however, the domain is forwarded and masked, the user will still be sent to coolexample.net, but the URL in the address bar will remain coolexample.com.
If you want to forward or mask your domain from your Go Daddy account, this is what you do:
Go to GoDaddy.com and log in to your Account Manager.
In the My Products section, click Domain Manager.
Select the domain name you want to forward.
Click Forward, and then select Forward Domain.
Select http:// or https:// depending on your server settings.
In the Forward to field, enter the URL you want to forward your domain name to.
To automatically update your name servers to accommodate your forwarding changes, select Update my DNS setting to support this change.
Note that activating this setting updates your domain name’s name servers and IP address. If you are currently hosting a Web site for a domain name and you forward it, visitors can no longer access your Web site. Instead, forwarding redirects your Web site’s visitors to the URL you enter.
To view additional options, including masking, click Advanced Options.
Select one of the following:
Forward Only — Specifies the length of time for this forwarding setting. Select one of the following Redirect types:
  • I am permanently forwarding my domain — Redirects to the site you specified in the Forward To field using a “301 Moved Permanently” HTTP response. The HTTP 301 response code tells user-agents (including search engines) that the location has permanently moved.
  • I am only temporarily forwarding my domain — Redirects to the site you specified in the Forward To field using a “302 Found” HTTP response. The HTTP 302 response code tells user-agents (including search engines) that the location has temporarily moved.
  • Forward with Masking — Prevents the forwarded domain name URL from displaying in the browser’s address bar.
  • Click OK.

What Can You Do With Your New Domain Name From GoDaddy.com?

rigister now!
When you register a domain name with GoDaddy.com or another domain registrar, you are, in effect, laying claim to your very own piece of virtual real estate on the World Wide Web. It’s yours, and you can use it for just about anything you want to. If you’ve checked out Go Daddy’s commercials you probably got some interesting ideas for what you can make happen once you own a domain, but let’s take a closer look at some of the many options you have as a newly minted Internet domain owner.

Build a Web SiteThe obvious thing to do with a domain is to put a Web site on it. You can create an awesome personal Web site and tell the world about yourself, your interests, your points of view, your family, etc. You can then spice things up with a cool photo album, videos, audio files and so on. If you buy a Web site builder, such as Go Daddy’s WebSite Tonight, you can have that site up and running in no time. You can also, of course, use your domain as the Internet home for your business. Ideally, the domain should contain the name of your business, which will make it easier for users to find it (it might also help your search engine ranking, eventually).
You can also dedicate the domain and Web site to a person, event or cause. With an attractive, content-rich site and an aggressive social media strategy, you can quickly spread the word on your new site.
BlogBlogging is the perfect way to make your voice be heard. You may be trying your hand at creative writing; you may be editorializing on current events; you may seek to stir up debate on pertinent issues; or you may simply be typing away to entertain yourself. Regardless: Blogging is easy — and free. So if writing’s your thing, consider using your new domain to set up a blog. You can even consider a video blog. Over at Go Daddy, they have the tools you need to easily set up any type of blog you want.
Build an InstantPageWhen you register a new domain with Go Daddy, they toss in a free so-called InstantPage, which is basically a simple one-page Web site that you can throw up on your domain in a few quick steps. It’s a perfect placeholder while you build your full-scale Web site or while you try to decide what to do with your domain. The InstantPage consists of a background image (your own or one from Go Daddy’s library) and a few widgets so you can tell the world about yourself or your business and how to find you. As an interim solution for your new domain, Go Daddy’s InstantPage is a great option.
Park It and Make Money from AdvertisingAnother thing you can do is to park your domain and try to make some money. With a program like Go Daddy’s CashParking, you can place ads on your parked domain and reap the profits whenever visitors click on the ads. This is a great and relatively simple way to cash in on your Internet real estate.
Use it To Sell Your HouseWith the housing market ever tighter, home sellers are desperately seeking an edge over the rest. An increasingly popular way to reach potential buyers is to register the address of your home and turn the domain into a powerful ad for the house you’re selling. It’s almost too easy, but many a home seller has figured out how effective it is!
Sell it for ProfitAn Internet domain can be a great investment — and if you manage to register an attractive one — one that’s memorable and likely to draw lots of Web traffic — you may be able to cash in big time by selling it through a domain auction site, such as Go Daddy Auctions. Strengthen Your Web Profile With a Certified Domain from Go Daddy

rigister now!
The Internet is infested with viruses, worms, spyware and lurking cyber crooks. So if you’re running an e-business, you MUST show your customers that your business can be trusted. One very powerful way to do this is to use one of Go Daddy’s special domain services and make the domain your Web site sits on a so-called “Certified Domain.” A Certified Domain lets people know that Go Daddy has formally certified its registration.
A Certified Domain provides visible evidence (in the form of the Domain Origination Certified seal) that a domain has been validated and its registrant’s credentials have been verified. This makes a Certified Domain particularly useful to owners of business Web sites and other sites that offer transactions and other activities of a sensitive nature. All site owners, however, can improve their site’s legitimacy and trustworthiness by displaying the Domain Origination Certified seal.
There are three ways to add Go Daddy domain certification to your domain:
1) You can purchase it directly from Go Daddy’s main Web site menu. You can apply it to either an existing or a new domain registration.
2) You can go to the Go Daddy Domain Manager and upgrade an existing domain to include domain certification.
3) You can apply a previously purchased domain certification credit to a domain that you currently have registered with Go Daddy.
Regardless of the method used to request domain certification, Go Daddy’s verification process starts immediately. When the domain has passed the validation process, Go Daddy adds a Domain Origination Certified seal to the domain’s Whois listing. You can also add the seal to the Web site for the certified domain, showing site visitors that the domain passed Go Daddy’s stringent validation process.
Keep in mind that a Domain Certificate is NOT the same as an SSL Certificate: An SSL certificate enables a secure, encrypted connection between a visitor’s Web browser and a Web site’s server and keeps transactions safe from tampering and interception. A Certified Domain shows Web site visitors that the registration and control of the Web site’s domain name were validated. A Certified Domain does not establish a secure connection and it does not provide credit card transaction processing. Most e-businesses will benefit from adding both certificate types to their Web sites.

.EU Domains and How to Register Them With GoDaddy.com

rigister now!
When you’re registering a domain with a company like GoDaddy.com, you can choose between a seemingly ever-growing list of extensions — such as .com, .net., .org, .info, .me, as well as a very long list of geo-specific country-code top-level domains.
Most such extensions are available only to individuals and companies with some affiliation with the country or region the extension represents. This is also the case with the .eu top-level domain, which, as you can imagine, represent the European Union. .eu domains are, of course, available from Go Daddy, but let’s take a closer look at the requirements for registering a domain with that extension.
Registration of .eu domain names is limited to individuals or companies from countries in the European Union. But if you meet that requirement, registering a .eu domain name gives you regional recognition and an easy-to-manage Web presence. As such it is of particular interest to companies that conduct business in the European Union and individuals who want to reach the growing number of Internet users there.
Besides the geographic requirement, .eu domains come with the following restrictions: Domain names can be up to 63 characters, with a minimum of three characters, and can contain letters (a to z), numbers (0 to 9), and hyphens (except at the beginning or end of the domain name). You cannot register domain names with special characters such as & and #.
The minimum registration length for .eu domain names is one year, and the maximum registration length is 10 years.
So how do you actually register your .eu domain with Go Daddy?
Well, it’s just as easy as registering any other domain with them:
Go to the Go Daddy home page and enter the domain name you want in the search field. Select .eu from the list of extensions.Click Go, and then proceed through the screens to complete the purchase. Remember that the contact information for the registrant must be an address within the EU.

How to Backorder a Domain With Go Daddy’s DomainAlert Pro Service

rigister now!
Sometimes, the domain you’ve got your eyes on is already taken. So what do you do? You can register another one, of course. But you can also try to get your hands on that dream domain if or when the current registrant gives it up. The best way to do this is to “backorder” the domain in question. And one of the best domain backordering programs out there is Go Daddy’s DomainAlert Pro.
Domain Alert Pro Backordering helps you attempt to acquire a domain name when it becomes available for registration. It includes a Domain Alert Pro Monitoring membership, a Go Daddy Auctions membership, $10 toward your first auction bid, and one year of domain name registration.
Keep in mind that there’s no guarantee that the domain will become yours. Many variables affect the Domain Alert Pro Backordering process. For instance, you might have to participate in an auction to win your backordered domain name, ad the auction might be public or private. This process is in place to provide each customer an equal opportunity to acquire domain names.
What Go Daddy does is to attempt to acquire the domain name for you when it becomes available for registration. And if it’s listed for auction, they provide you instructions on how to participate.
Go Daddy’s Domain Alert Pro Backordering also helps you track the domain name in question by keeping you in the loop on the domain name’s expiration date and notifying you of any changes to its status.
If a backordered domain name becomes available, but Go Daddy’s service fails to acquire it or you lose the auction, you can reassign the backorder to another domain name or request a refund Go Daddy.

Go Daddy Tells You to Register Multiple Domains

 rigister now!
When you try to register a domain name with Go Daddy, you’ll soon find out that they’re going out of their way to convince you to register not just one, but several domains while you’re at it. It makes sense that Go Daddy would love to sell you as many products as possible — it is, after all, a for-profit operation. But if you take the time to read their pitch, you’ll see that they list a number of seemingly very good reasons why you should at least consider their proposition. Go Daddy is even helpful enough to suggest a number of additional domains for you to consider throwing in before you check out.

But do their claims hold water?

Go Daddy’s “buy-lots-of-domains” sales pitch boils down to this: Registering and using multiple domains names is great for building your business, protecting your brand name, and creating a dynamic online identity. That sounds pretty compelling, so let’s take a closer look at what they’re suggesting.
Here’s the complete list of the advantages of registering multiple domains, courtesy of GoDaddy.com:
When you register multiple domain names, you can:
Keep your competition from registering a similar domain name drawing customers to them instead of you.    Promote the different products and services you offer.    Drive more traffic to your Web site.    Enjoy more opportunities to market to — and be listed in — search engines.    Create distinct advertising strategies reaching different target markets.    Provide customers more ways to find you when searching the Internet.    Capture common misspellings of your domain name, instead of sending visitors to an error page.    Protect your brand and online identity.
Plenty of reasons to go all out and register a whole bunch of new domains.
Obviously, some of these claims are no more than, well, claims. Whether or not multiple domains will help you and you business in the way Go Daddy is suggesting of course largely depends on which ones you register, and what you do with them. Certainly, you can, as Go Daddy suggests, register any number of common misspellings of your company’s name. And you should. Similarly, you should definitely consider registering all of the most common extensions for your domain. This will indeed protect your brand and help you reel in Web users who are looking for your business, but fail to get the name right.
It also makes sense to use a multiple-domain strategy to create and roll out individual advertising and marketing strategies aimed at different targets.
As for the claim that registering multiple domains can help boost your search engine rankings, it entirely comes down to how you plan on using those domains in your search engine strategies. But as long as you’re not using them for blatant black-hat SEO purposes, it certainly won’t hurt.
In conclusion: Go Daddy certainly makes some good points when they ask you to consider registering multiple domains. And if you pick those additional domains carefully, it’s not a bad idea at all.
